About Us Bylaws |
|
Valley Byliners was established in 1943 by a group of writers who wanted to improve their skills and enjoy fellowship with other writers. Throughout the years, the group has sponsored many writers’ workshops, conferences, and writing contests.
In the 1970’s and early 1980’s, they published a trilogy of books on Valley history that received wide acclaim. In Gift of the Rio, the first in the trilogy published in 1976, the authors sought to answer the questions about the place, the ecology, the soil—all gifts of the Rio Grande. Roots by the River, published in 1978, told about some of the area’s pioneers, as did Rio Grande Roundup, which followed in 1980. Strong threads interwoven through the three books reflect the merging cultures of the peoples on both sides of the Rio Grande.
When considering what kind of book members might write today, it was acknowledged that the area’s history has been thoroughly recorded in the many good books already published. However, few of those writers had delved into the culture of legends and tales of the supernatural spun by the people. To take advantage of this rich lore, members have come together to create Tales Told at Midnight in the Rio Grande Valley, which we hope you will enjoy.
Current Byliners include published and unpublished writers who love to write and are interested in learning how to improve and market their writing. Members meet monthly on the second Saturday at 1:30 p.m., usually at the Harlingen Public Library. They enjoy diverse monthly programs, inspiring workshops, and encouragement for writers in all genres. New members and visitors are always welcome.
